In American we have a law called Eminent domain. Eminent as time is running and it eventually will take place, your land will be confiscated, is how I remember it. The law, yes, it exists. It is feared, as it can allow the government to force you to sell your house. There are different versions of this, but the United States version is mild. I do fear the power of this law, I have seen it put to use. Yet we have laws that allow for payment of your loss to your home. Not all people believe in this. Imminent peril is the word for what has been happening to people in Jerusalem, as Israel forces people to abandon their homes (or just destroys them). In a sick and twisted version of imminent domain, here the government tells the people, you will give up your house, we will NOT buy it from you. And you WILL PAY US for destroying your house. Oh my god. This is why you should NEVER trust any government.
The experience of demolishing the house and the history of his own family has left Al Tawil empty, but everything has been reduced to a stark economic reality. The Jerusalem municipality told him it would cost 280,000 shekels (more than 83,000 euros) to have its workers demolish the house, while hiring his own equipment and labor costs Al Tawil less than a tenth.
