Innovation killers.
Things that stop innovation. A common innovator will get the feedback, no one cares about his idea. Or the sound of silence, lack of any feedback makes the innovator think that no one cares about the idea. What to do? Don’t give up.
I suggest keep talking until you get more information. I did this recently and found that I should be able to demonstrate the concept to the leaders. Really? I didn’t know that would be necessary with a idea that I came up with. In this organization, yes, they want to see the demonstration. For me I can provide a demonstration, in a limited way. More work for me to polish the demonstration.

If you need to demonstration of your idea or your process, you might want to think about the technology readiness level. This is from the united states government from nasa, they have a thing called the TRL level. For my invention, I am somewhere between t r l level one and t r l level two. I have a basic proof of concept but it does not address all the goals of the idea. Read below to understand more about the technology readiness levels.

Be aware of common problems with innovation. Here are some innovation rules of thumb. Review these as you work on your idea and demonstration.

Know these and be aware of these innovation killers:

  1. Implementation Friction. It’s just too complicated!
  2. Proprietary (corporate intellectual property) stumbling blocks. Focusing on how intellectual property will make this improbable or impossible.
  3. It’s not a quick win.
  4. Too obscure. The idea, it doesn’t solve any existing problems, so let’s ignore for now.
  5. Working on a solution or idea but not spending time on how to demonstrate the concept to stakeholders.
  6. Working on a solution or idea, but not spending equivalent time on how to get creative work arounds to items in items 1-5 listed above.

Innovation paradoxes. Innovation applied will create unexpected results. The expected result may not be as expected and totally unexpected process may emerge. What paradoxes will artificial intelligence create? I keep thinking, when will school children be told to use the ai consultant whenever they are need help? I can think of an AI Agent that could help many people like with gambling habits. But what other effects will it create?

Some history, to illustrate. The Jevons Paradox is an economic principle stating that as technological advancements increase the efficiency of resource use, total consumption of that resource often rises rather than falls. Because efficiency lowers per-unit costs, it unlocks new demand and makes previously unviable projects economically feasible.

Proposed by English economist William Stanley Jevons in his 1865 book The Coal Question. He observed that James Watt’s improved, highly efficient steam engines didn’t reduce coal consumption as many expected; instead, it made coal-powered production so cheap and widespread that total coal use skyrocketed.

Someone told me once that a long time ago, when nuclear power was just coming online, that it was going to make electricity free. There was actually thought that it may be free to give away electricity in the future. Because nuclear power made electrical generations so cost effective. And so such a low cost that it may become free. So low cost that it may even be free. Obviously that didn’t happen. And obviously they didn’t really think about the long term costs involved of disposal of the nuclear fuel. And I believe that still the case that in the united states, there is no long term storage of nuclear fuel. That cost is still going to be added to the price of electricity as they continue to figure out where to store used nuclear fuel in the long term.
